In December, I was chatting with a company about assisting with their Internet marketing programs.
They knew they had a great product, but weren't happy with the performance of their existing web site and Internet marketing firm.
We discussed how I could help and they decided to start working with me in January since they were leaving shortly for Christmas holidays.
Unfortunately their relationship with their existing designer deteriorated too fast and their designer, who was also their hosting company, took down their web sites leaving them with no web sites and no email.
This illustrates the need for web site owners to protect themselves by having access to their hosting and backups of their web site. I wrote a previous article on this topic called, "Does Your Web Site Designer Have Too Much Control?"
So I had to start a little sooner than expected, in an emergency situation! I helped them move to a new hosting company. But how to get their web site back up when I had no access to the old site?
The Wayback Machine came to the rescue! The Wayback Machine is a free Internet service that has archived 30 billion web pages since it started 1996. Using The Wayback Machine, I was able to recover most of the text from the sites rather than recreating it from scratch.
The Wayback Machine is much more than a way of recovering lost sites, it provides a valuable service by documenting the history and evolution of the Internet, web sites and companies over the years.
Of course it means those horrible web sites many of us put up years ago can still come back to haunt us!
