Google is NOT the Internet

Repeat after me, ?Google is not the Internet??

I love Google.  It is an excellent search tool and has some great possibilities for marketing.  But many people I talk to focus solely on their search engine rankings in Google while totally ignoring other search engines and other Internet marketing methods.

According to the results of a recent search engine use survey Google IS the #1 search engine.  There seems to be a real focus in North America that #1 is best and nothing else is worth looking at.

But if we focus on Google and ignore the other search engines, we would be missing some huge opportunities.  Here are the most recent statistics in a search engine use survey article on Search Engine Watch.

Google ? 36.8%

Yahoo ? 26.6%

MSN ? 14.5%

AOL ? 12.8%

So if we focus on Google only because it is the leader, we are ignoring 63% of our potential market!  It is important to ensure your search engine marketing program reaches beyond just Google.

In addition, search engines are only one of many powerful techniques that can be used to market on the Internet.  A balanced Internet marketing program includes a wide range of techniques including electronic newsletters, e-mail marketing, online communities, Internet publicity, word of mouth, online networking, article marketing, auto responders, search engine optimization, search engine advertising and more.

So make Google one small part of your Internet marketing program, not your entire focus.
